Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 PF NATO Code Name: "Fishbed D" The MiG-21 was Russia's first operational fighter capable of speeds in excess of Mach 2. Though appearing simple in design, it was in reality a highly sophisticated aircraft and a serious threat to comparable Western fighters. Even by contemporary standards, the MiG-21 remains an excellent air-combat platform. New and refined updates to the MiG-21 are a major business in the world arms community and it appears the tailed delta fighter will remain in operational front-line service for many decades to come. The MiG-21's positive attributes are many, but the most important include its small size, its light weight, and its exceptional maneuverability and performance. It is perhaps the least expensive high-performance combat aircraft in the world today. Accordingly, several thousand remain operational with small air forces across the globe. The Champlin Collection's MiG-21PF is one of many released by Russian satellite countries following the collapse of the Soviet Union during the late 1980s. It is an ex-Czechoslovakian Air Force aircraft equipped for air-intercept/point-defense work. It is fully operational, with functioning radar, ejection seat, and weapons systems. |
