Family Event
ShuttleFest
Sunday, July 1 to Saturday, July 7
In celebration of the scheduled June 30 arrival of the space shuttle trainer crew compartment, the Museum has planned a week of special activities, lectures and book signings. ShuttleFest begins July 1 with the display of the NASA Super Guppy cargo plane that is used to deliver large sections of the shuttle trainer to the Museum, and it concludes with a big band dance party July 7.
Outdoor Aircraft Exhibit
NASA Super Guppy Cargo Plane
Sunday, July 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
NASA's unique Super Guppy cargo plane will be on display in the Museum parking lot. Weather permitting, the hinged nose section of the aircraft will remain open so visitors can see the inside of the cavernous plane. NASA crew members will be on hand to answer questions.
Lecture
Presentation by Shuttle Astronaut and Super Guppy Pilot Greg Johnson
Sunday, July 1, 2 p.m.
West Seattle native Greg Johnson will share his experiences as a NASA pilot and astronaut. Johnson will be the pilot-in-command during the Super Guppy shuttle trainer delivery flight from Houston to Seattle.

VFW Members Tell the Story of "The Twenty-Seven Flags"
Wednesday, July 4, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Members of Skyway Post 9430 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars honor the nation's 236th birthday with a salute to the American flag - all 27 versions that have officially represented the United States over the years. From the first 13-star flag authorized by Congress in 1777 to today's 50-star flag, the presentation of each iteration is accompanied with the story of its symbolism in this moving and educational program for all ages.

Thursday, July 5, 5 to 9 p.m.
Once a month, the Museum stays open late - and admission is free! Enjoy the Museum's Great Gallery, Personal Courage Wing, Red Barn, Airpark and more from 5 to 9 p.m., courtesy of Wells Fargo. Museum Store and Wings Café will also remain open for the extended hours on this night.

Bank of America Weekend Family Workshop: Spy in the Skies!
Saturdays and Sundays, July 7, 8, 14, 15, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Can you keep a secret?...You don't need Top Secret Clearance to come to this program...but it would help! Learn about the SR-71, known as the Blackbird - the most amazing spy plane to ever take to the skies. Then make your own Blackbird model.
Panel Discussion
American Fighter Aces Symposium
Saturday, July 7, 2 p.m.
Three combat pilots will share their experiences during an afternoon panel discussion. Panelists include Col. Abner Aust, Jr., a World War II Pacific Theater ace with eight aircraft destroyed - five in the air and three on the ground. The Museum of Flight is home to the American Fighter Aces Association, founded to recognize the 1,442 combat pilots that have received the special designation of "ace."

Boogie Woogie Hangar Dance
July 7, 6 to 10 p.m.
The legendary Harry James Orchestra is coming to The Museum of Flight. It's a Big Band Hangar Dance featuring the sweet, sweet horn of the incomparable Fred Radke and the captivating vocals of Gina Funes. Break out your inner Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy for a night you'll never forget! Food and beverages available for purchase. Tickets available online or the day of the program. Members $25, General $30.
Helicopter Fly-In Event
American Heroes Air Show - Courage at the Speed of Flight
Saturday, July 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Seattle's only helicopter air show is a celebration of public service. Learn how helicopters play an important role in law enforcement, fire service, public safety, communications, national defense and homeland security. The American Heroes Air Show features static displays, special presentations and entertainment. Representatives from many organizations including local flight schools, Border Patrol, Search and Rescue units, and the U.S. Coast Guard will be available to answer questions. See helicopters like the Blackhawk flown by the U.S. Army 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, as well as those flown by Airlift Northwest, KING 5 TV and many others. The helicopters will arrive between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. Come early to see them land.
New this year, the air show will include a special U.S. Citizen and Immigration Service naturalization ceremony for members of the military, first responders and aviators who have applied for U.S. citizenship. The public are welcome to attend this patriotic event and witness people achieve their dreams of citizenship.

During World War II, Boeing Field and Plant 2 were camouflaged by a Hollywood scene designer. Learn about how he did it. Then make your own model of Boeing Plant 2 disappear!
Space Exploration Day Lecture
Presentation with Astronaut Dr. Michael Barratt
Saturday, July 21, 2 p.m.
Astronaut Dr. Michael Barrett will help The Museum of Flight commemorate the dual anniversaries of the first manned landing on the Moon - Apollo 11 July 20, 1969 - and the first robotic landing on Mars-Viking I, July 20, 1976. Barratt was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2000. In 2009, he flew with Seattle space tourist Charles Simonyi on the Russian Soyuz TMA-14 to the International Space Station, where he served as a flight engineer on NASA ISS Expeditions 19 and 20. In 2011, he was a crew member on the final flight of space shuttle Discovery, STS-133.
Barratt grew up in Camas, Wash. and graduated from the University of Washington. His medical degree is from Northwestern University. He currently manages the Human Research Program at NASA Johnson Space Center and is the senior editor of the textbook, "Principles of Clinical Medicine for Space Flight."

Voyage to Mars: Space Travel for Families
Saturday, July 28, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Be an astronaut for a day! In this mission to Mars, your group is traveling to the Red Planet to replace a crew of astronauts who have been living there for the past two years. In addition to landing on the Martian surface, the team collects and analyzes geologic samples and launches exploratory probes to the two moons of Mars. The excitement takes place in the Museum's Challenger Learning Center, a facility designed to simulate space missions for large groups using a full-scale mission control center and a spacecraft cabin. Each mission uses hands-on activities engaging participants in teamwork, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. And it is fun!
Cost (Including museum admission): Member: $7 youth (under 18); id="mce_marker"2 adult

Audience: Ages 10 and up. Youth under 16 years old must be accompanied by adult participant. One adult minimum per 5 youths.

Cancellation policy: A full refund will be made if you cancel at least three working days prior to the program. No refund will be made after that date. There are no partial refunds. This program requires a minimum number of participants. You will be notified, and a full refund issued, if this event is cancelled.

We've got the blues...but we're happy about it! Once again the spectacular Blue Angels are visiting Seattle and The Museum of Flight. In celebration, all Blues fans are invited to stop by and make fabulous Blue Angels souvenirs.

Blue Angels Week
Thursday, Aug. 2 - Sunday, Aug. 5
The world-famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels star in the Boeing Air Show at Seafair's Albert Lee Cup hydroplane races. The Museum of Flight is again Blue Angels' headquarters during the team's entire Seafair stay. Museum visitors will be able see the jets up close from Thursday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 5. Activities include the team's precise pre-flight walkdowns, thrilling formation takeoffs and the chance to meet some of the Navy's finest pilots as they return from their practice sessions and show performances.
Blue Angels family activities will be featured all week, with events inside and outside of the Museum, including the new Need for Speed Festival on the Museum's lot adjacent to the runway Aug. 4 and 5. All programs are free with Museum admission.

Sled Driver
Blackbird Pilot, Blue Angels Photographer Brian Shul
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Aug. 3 - 5, 2:30 p.m.
Photographer, author, pilot and showman Brian Shul shares stories and photos from his experience as a "sled driver"-an SR-71 Blackbird pilot. The presentation is based upon his book, "Sled Driver," which features Shul's dazzling photography and insightful prose to illustrate what it is like to fly the world's fastest, highest-flying jet, the SR-71 Blackbird. Shul's program includes riveting accounts of Mach 3 runs over hostile territory and star gazing at 80,000 feet. Shul has appeared at the Museum during Blue Angels week for nearly 20 years. Shul has also traveled the air show circuit with the Blue Angels for his book "Blue Angels: A Portrait of Gold." The program is free with admission to the Museum.
Outdoor Event
Need for Speed Festival
Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Seafair and the Blue Angels celebration runs full-throttle with the weekend Need for Speed Festival. At the foot of the Blue's launching pad, the Museum's East Lot will combine family activities surrounded by fast planes, fast boats and fast cars. The event will bring together speedy World War II fighters from the Heritage Flight Museum, Paul Allen Flying Heritage Collection and the Historic Flight Foundation, a T-38 jet from the Olympic Flight Museum and special aircraft from The Museum of Flight's collection. The festival is home base for the front line F-18, T-38s and A-10s performing in the Boeing Air Show at the Albert Lee Cup hydroplane races. Speedy driving will be represented by over a dozen high performance and race cars. And the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum's Century 21 hydroplane will fill the bill for speedy boats.
Need for Speed will also offer a beer garden, a sandwich kiosk, souvenirs, kids' activities and New Orleans-style rhythm and blues by Hank and the Two Scoops.
Need for Speed is free with admission to the Museum.
Special Event
MarsFest 2012: Mars Science Laboratory Landing Party
Sunday, Aug. 5, 8 to 11:30 p.m.
The NASA's space-faring Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity is scheduled to land on Mars at approximately 10:30 p.m. PDT on the evening of Aug. 5 Earth time. The Museum of Flight will show the NASA coverage of the landing as it is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The event is free and open to the public.
Lecture and Book Signing
"The Future Remembered: The 1962 Seattle World's Fair and its Legacy"
Saturday, Aug. 18, 2 p.m.
Astronauts, Elvis, sky rides, royalty, the Space Needle, the Kennedys, the Cold War and futurist speculation - the 1962 Seattle World's Fair had it all. Authors Paula Becker and Alan Stein will talk about the Fair and the coffee-table book they produced to commemorate it. A book signing follows the presentation.

Panel Discussion
Distinguished Flying Cross Society Symposium
Sunday, Aug. 19, 2 p.m.
The Distinguished Flying Cross Society will present a panel of recipients of the DFC from four conflicts in which American air power played a decisive role: World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. The panel will be moderated by Glen Jewett.

2012 Space Elevator Conference Family Science Fest
Saturday, Aug. 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Going up? While the 3-day, 2012 Space Elevator Conference at the Museum looks at the technical side of elevators with a top floor 22,000 miles up, the Conference's Family Science Fest offers fun activities a little more down to Earth.
Planned activities include: Space Elevators 101 and 201 presentations; a robotics challenge for middle- and high-school level robotics teams to build/program an autonomous, tether-climbing robot; The Museum of Flight "Robot Garage" where you can explore the basic engineering skills to build a successful extra-terrestrial rover; a LEGO Build Zone for kids to build their own space-faring creations; Robot Alley - a display of robots from local robotics teams/clubs; and an exhibition of kids' Space Artwork.
