Symposium
Celebrating the B-52
Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In honor of the B-52 bomber's 60th birthday, Stratofortress engineers, pilots, crew members and historians will present lectures and discussions about the long-lived bomber's role in war and peace. Conditions permitting, a B-52G will visit the Museum with limited availability for tours.
Saturday events include panel programs with former and current flight crew members and a
B-52 test pilot. Some of the flight crew members will talk about their experiences in Operation Linebacker II during the Vietnam War
Sunday events include a panel discussion and book signing with author Col. Jim Hoopaw, author of "Tall Tail Tales" and "Where the Buf Fellows Roamed." Hooppaw is a retired US Air Force pilot with 26 years experience in the Strategic Air Command. He flew the B-47E and
B-52C, D, E, F, G and H models, and served as a pilot, instructor, Squadron Commander, and Bomb Wing Deputy Commander of Operations. Hoopaw also completed three tours during Vietnam War's Operation Arc Light.
All symposium programs are free with admission to the Museum.

Air America Program
Saturday, Sept. 29, 2 p.m.
This panel discussion looks at Air America, the passenger and cargo airline established in 1950 and covertly owned and operated by the CIA in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. The featured speaker is Marius Burke, the helicopter pilot who flew the famous last evacuation flight from the U.S. Embassy in Saigon in 1975. Panelists include some of the men who took part in the evacuations of Da Nang and Saigon.

Wells Fargo Free First Thursday

Once a month, the Museum stays open late - and admission is free! Enjoy the Museum's Great Gallery, Personal Courage Wing, Red Barn, Space Gallery and more from 5 to 9 p.m., courtesy of Wells Fargo. Museum Store and Wings Café will also remain open for the extended hours on this night.

Astronomy Day
Thursday, Oct. 4, 5 to 9 p.m.
Special programs and family activities all looking up to the deep sky. Local astronomy clubs will be at the Museum to share their knowledge of the heavens with viewing opportunities through their telescopes, and visitors can also marvel at the wonders of the night sky in the Museum's portable planetarium. Free.

Some of the oldest stories in the world can be seen in the night sky. Hear how people have used the stars to instruct and entertain each other, then design a constellation mobile!

Military Fly Moms
Author Linda Maloney

Linda Maloney, one of the first women in U.S. history to join a combat military flying squadron, and a mom, will share the stories and photographs from her book "Military Fly Moms - Sharing Memories, Building Legacies, Inspiring Hope." The book is a coffee table-style collection of inspiring true stories of women who shared the same two dreams--becoming military aviators, and being moms. Maloney interviewed more than 100 women from every military service. They tell of their paths to the military and flying, combat experiences, the joys being a mom, and how to balance family and career. The stories and photographs weave a beautiful tapestry to inspire all moms and future generations to reach for their dreams. Maloney will sign her books after the presentation.

Around the World, Over the Poles

Thirty-five years ago this month, Pan American World Airways organized Flight 50, the first passenger flight around the world over the North and South Poles. The Boeing 747SP Clipper New Horizons made the journey from San Francisco to London, Cape Town, Auckland and back to San Francisco in 54 hours, 7 minutes, 12 seconds. Join aviation author Brian Baum as he recounts what it was like to be a passenger aboard the record-setting circumnavigation, using his unique collection of slides taken during the flight.

The Museum of Fright

Fly your broomstick to the Museum and help us celebrate Halloween's scariest flyers! Make a ghostly creature that is sure to give your parents a fright when you send it floating through the air. Join in on the flightfully spooky fun - that is, if you're not too scared! Free admission for kids 17 and under in costume (with adult supervision), $5 admission for kids 17 and under without a costume, id="mce_marker"0 for all adults. Admission prices are valid all day.
