In 1963, the US Air Force launched the Airborne Warning and Control System program to replace the Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star as its AEW (Airborne Early Warning) aircraft of choice. Boeing, Lockheed, and Douglas were issued contracts, with Boeing’s 707-based design ultimately being selected for testing and development. The program culminated with the production of the Boeing E-3 Sentry.

This scale model depicts Douglas’s unselected AWACS concept design, based on their DC-8 jet airliner. Painted in green and brown camouflage, it sports US Air Force and Tactical Air Command decals and an AWACS radar dome.
