The Volunteer Researcher and Reading Room Assistant serves two main areas:
- Conduct research to answer ongoing reference questions
- Assist researchers in-person in the Dahlberg Research Center
During research appointments, the Assistant may help Museum Collections staff with tasks during a researcher visit including supervision of researchers, ensuring correct handling of materials, making copies on-demand and creating PDF scans using a copier. They may also be assigned tasks by the Library or Archives team, such as reshelving books, refiling ready-reference files, sorting materials, or doing basic rehousing of archival materials.
Responsibilities
- Engage in research using books, databases, and the internet and provide timely assistance to Reference Archivist and Supervisory Librarian
- Learn how to explain proper handling of archival materials to researchers
- Assist Collections Staff in supervising researchers to ensure safety of collections
- Ensure all TMOF reading room policies are adhered to (items in lockers, proper handling, no food/drink, etc.)
- Create on-demand copies of materials as well as PDF scans to be sent to researchers.
- Other projects, as needed.
Working Conditions
Volunteers are asked to work at least two shifts per month with a six-month commitment. The Collections Department can host volunteers Monday-Thursday between 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Qualifications
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and using copy machines
- Basic knowledge of aviation history and or related subjects, or willing to learn
- Research experience using libraries and archives
- Displays courteous and friendly demeanor; able to engage with researchers and enforce policies
- Open to learning new tasks
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
