A two-part program for high school sophomores and juniors focused on the history and future exploration of space and topics in Earth and Space Science.
PHASE ONE
Online distance learning course designed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington, which provides scholars the opportunity to earn five UW college credits.
PHASE TWO
A multi-day residency experience where scholars work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students, and STEM educators to plan a realistic space mission.
In addition to the course, WAS provides interaction with STEM industry professionals, hands-on engineering activities, and a national alumni network. WAS alumni are also provided exclusive opportunities for internships and college scholarships.
Junior Program - Oregon residents
The junior level program runs from November through April, and has scholars participating in an online course consisting of ten bi-weekly lessons and a final project. If scholars successfully complete the online course, they can apply to receive five University of Washington natural science (ESS 102) credits and are invited to participate in a six-day summer residency experience.
The Summer Residency provides scholars the opportunity to work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students, and STEM educators to plan a human mission to Mars.
The 2019-20 Junior Program is no longer accepting applications. The 2020-2021 program applications will be available late summer 2020.
PHASE ONE: November 2020 through April 2021
- Assignments are due every two weeks, November to April.
PHASE TWO: Summer 2021
- Junior program summer residency is a six-day, onsite experience, Sunday to Friday
- Dates and locations will be shared with scholars at the start of Phase One in November

Sophomore Program - Oregon Residents
The sophomore level course serves as an introduction to the junior level course. It is a FREE online course that takes place in the spring of sophomore year and contains the first two lessons of the junior program. Scholars who successfully complete the online coursework are invited to participate in a FREE three-day summer experience and are granted automatic admission into the junior program in the fall.

PHASE ONE: March through April 2020

PHASE TWO: July or August 2020
- Sophomore three-day summer experiences held across Oregon, at a variety of locations
- The summer experience is a 3-day workshop held from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM each day
- Specific dates and locations for the summer experiences will be shared with scholars at the start of their online experience in March
