Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is an online distance learning course and summer experience specifically designed for high school juniors interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) pathways through the exploration of flight, aerospace design, and space travel.
The online curriculum is a University of Washington college course focused on air and space vehicle design and NASA’s space exploration program as well as topics in Earth and Space Science. If scholars successfully complete the online curriculum, they are invited to participate in multi-day summer experiences that provide them the opportunity to work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students, and STEM educators.
Graduates of the WAS program gain access to $250,000 worth of exclusive scholarship opportunities and receive a free membership to The Museum of Flight.

Responsibilities
- Serve as an enthusiastic and compassionate volunteer, working alongside school age learners, caretakers and the Museum of Flight staff to facilitate successful program completion and foster a collaborative community.
- Provide guidance and advice on pursuing STEM careers, sharing college and career experiences, and serving as a positive role model to ensure all learners feel seen, heard and validated.
- Cultivate curiosity, belonging and perseverance in the next generation by creating a safe space for inquiry and excitement for learning, and develop leadership skills through guiding learners in problem solve and communicate effectively.
Qualifications
- Experience within the aerospace, aviation or STEM industries, demonstrating dedication to mentoring and supporting learners with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, fostering a culture of curiosity, exploration and continuous learning with empathy, patience and active listening.
- Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, inspiring underrepresented students, and willingness to undergo a background check, required training and orientation.
- Must be 16 years or older
Time Required
A dedicated time commitment that involves building meaningful relationships that provide consistent support and guidance. This commitment extends beyond mere advice-giving; it entails active listening, sharing experiences, offering constructive feedback and serves as a dependable source of encouragement and inspiration.
Time: 20 to 50 hours per year
